Wolfdogs have been increasingly popular in Canada, the United States and Europe. These animals require a great deal of commitment, patience and energy. Wolfdogs require extensive socialization, exercise, a good form of containment and a high protein diet. Many people who have bought or rescued a wolfdog have found themselves unable to care for these animals and there are many in shelters or in rescue situations.
In 1993 the dog and wolf were determined to be canis lupus by Code of International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature and the American Society of Mammologists. Past thinking that a wolf dog or wolf-hybrid are offspring from two different animals of two different species is incorrect. Generally a wolfdog is bred to another wolfdog rather than breeding with a wolf. Most often German shepherds, malamutes and huskies are used to create a dog that looks wolf like. However wolfdogs should only be owned by an experienced owner and only if knowledge of wolf behaviour is researched before hand.
Here at Wolfsong Kennels we breed high quality, mid to high content wolfdogs. Our animals come from verified lineage with reputable pedigrees. Our dogs are raised underfoot with extensive socialization, a large amount of exercise and a raw diet supplemented by a high quality, high protein diet. Wolfdogs are extremely loyal, affectionate and with the right training make wonderful companions. However we breed selectively, we do not over breed and our pups go only to homes that have been screened. Our buyers are important to us and we stand by and support our pups and owners for life. We promote responsible wolfdog ownership through education at schools and provide hands on experience for children and adults. We also educate our community as education is the key to knowledge and many have come away with a new found respect for the capabilities of our wolfdogs. The intention to have a wolfdog must be to keep this animal for life, promote responsible wolfdog ownership and simply to enjoy the loving nature of wolfdogs as a companion.
